Welcome to #6 of AlphaScope. Hard to believe, but it was
nearly a year ago -- June 1997 to be exact -- that I launched AlphaScope
as a fan e-zine to celebrate the relaunch of Alpha Flight! Since that time,
much has happened to the Flight -- brainwashing, extreme manipulation,
a tussle with Wolverine and the X-Men, and even a descent into the Microverse!
Issue #12 of Alpha Flight should be hitting the stands as you read this
(if you're reading this in May -- if not, well, it should still be on the
stands if you're really lucky!), promising to reveal the secrets
behind Department H's sinister machinations. That, and new regular artists
Duncan Rouleau and Troy Hubbs!
This year also celebrates Alpha Flight's 20th anniversary!
Yes, it's been 20 years since the James MacDonald Hudson, then known as Weapon Alpha, went up against
the X-Men in their own comic -- 20 years since Chris Claremont and John
Byrne created this team of Canadian heroes to go toe to toe with the Children
of the Atom! Alpha Flight fans on the net intend to celebrate this landmark
-- watch for special features on both future issues of AlphaScope, Net
Alpha, Alpha Zone, Department H and a host of other Alpha Flight web sites
out there in cyber world.
And since we're speaking about time, I'd like to take
this time to thank all readers and especially contributors whose
efforts have been instrumental in keeping AlphaScope interesting and relevant
for fans of Alpha Flight. It could never have happened without you people.
So, to Dwayne MacKinnon, Sue Wong, Ben Rhoades, Daniel Dharmasurya, Blue
Soon, Ben 'Tonto' Wells, Derek Robinson, Eric Scott Gratton, Ant, Cale
McCallum and Braden Giordano, my thanks. You people have been brilliant!
My heartfelt thanks must also go to [email protected] for designing the new
look AlphaScope and for the simply beautiful mastheads. You can see more
of Noc's great work at Meltdown
and The Marvel Universe
This issue also marks my last as editor and designer of AlphaScope.
I've had quite an experience producing and putting together this e-zine, and
it's been a bit of a blast. Fear not, though, for AlphaScope is not destined
to linger in Limbo. The esteemable Derek 'Del' Robinson and Ben 'Tonto'
Wells (of AlphaZone fame) are stepping in as co-editors of AlphaScope,
and their enthusiasm and insight into things Alpha will surely make AlphaScope
bigger and better than ever (and if you know Ben Wells and his AlphaZone
site, you'll know what I mean by 'big' -- that boy's site is just massive!).
So, it's with a tear in my eye (well, metaphorically speaking)
that I bid AlphaScope farewell. I'm not completely gone though -- I will
be contributing to future issues, so watch out for me there. And you can
always check out Net Alpha - The Unofficial Alpha Flight Web Site (yeah,
poor excuse for a free plug) for more great stuff on Alpha. For now, adios...
and I'll see you in the funny pages.
Seng Mah
Now a word from Derek:
When Seng mentioned during a chat, that he was considering suspending or maybe stopping Alphascope altogether, I suggested that perhaps he could ask somebody else to take over. So he did and here we are. Ben and I are under no illusions that we can produce anything of the standard Seng
has turned out over the last year, but we would like to stay as true as possible to the quality. Therefore I am asking for as many contributions as possible.
Any comments regarding articles which you may have read within the Scope, any comments which you consider relevant to Alpha Flight. Also if you have
anything you yourself have composed and would perhaps like to give it an airing then please feel free to forward it to Ben or myself ([email protected]).
BTW : There is no truth to the rumor that Seng is now going to run a Seng's Soapbox and answer questions regarding the early days of the Scope, or the ineptitude of it's current editorial team. He is however willing to discuss our ineptitude on a one to one basis at the usual address.
Now that you have read my inane ramblings, please feel free to cruise around the E-zine and remember, we need input, we can't improve if we don't know where we are failing.
Thanks for Listening.
Note to readers: AlphaScope is
always looking for contributors. In fact, it is a fan-driven e-zine, so
if there are no contributors, then there'd be no AlphaScope. If you would
like to have something published on AlphaScope, please contact Derek
Robinson.
AlphaScope is a non-profit
fan-related production. It is not intended
as a challenge to Marvel Comics' copyright to the concept and characters.
It is a fan e-zine produced by and for fans of Alpha Flight. 1998 Seng Mah / Derek Robinson. |
readers since 9th June 1997.
